John Smith – a Shetlander living and working in the big smoke of Edinburgh, Scotland (UK), aims to provide clients with high impact and highly functional Information Systems - specifically Internet/Intranet sites, web based applications and standalone database applications. Whatever, it will be based on the doctrine of “User Centered Development”, whereby the user is central to layout and usability. This is a systematic process of creation and scrutiny, achieving not only an information system with the correct technical infrastructure, but more importantly, a good system, one that is easy to use and meets the needs of its users.

Happy working in either a Microsoft or Linux centric environment I freelance not only on Internet/Intranet related developments, but also back-end/back-office database work too.

  • Advanced understanding of Adobe Creative Suite
  • DHTML/AJAX/AHAH: JavaScript, JScript, VBScript, XSLT/XML, Web Services
  • LAMP: Linux, Apache, PHP, MySQL;
  • Databases: MS Access, MySQL, MS SQL, flatfile XML
  • SharePoint: front-end development and IA
  • Web server Administration: Linux/Apache with or without cPanel administrative tools
  • SEO: Proven techniques viewable on yadUK.co.uk developments
  • Web Analytics: Goal orientated analysis and re-development as necessary
  • Business Objects: front-end and or back-end VB reporting.
  • Advanced MS Office: including automation between applications using VBA
  • Management, administration, moderation and development of online communities
  • Corporate financial reporting: Business Objects and MS Office and associated Office based software

I have a particular interest in client-side development utilising technologies such as JavaScript / XML / XSLT / Web Services.
