Appliance Rescue Reboot

An eCommerce site reboot before the Christmas period for a Shetland based electrical appliance servicing company specialising in the refurbishment of damaged appliances.
The Appliance Rescue site has seen a complete redesign inclusive of an online catalogue and eCommerce shopping cart facility. Specifically targeted at Shetlanders, anyone with a computer can now view and select from a range of household white goods. Payment may be made through the PayPal IPN Network with customers returned to the site after transaction.

The site utilises XHTML Transitional markup with CSS for styling and is dynamically generated using PHP Smarty templating. Administrated entirely from an intuitive back-end, the client has access to change / update their products as well as all web pages.

Overall the site has been optimised for search engines with SEO friendly URLs and adheres to the DDA: Disibility Discrimination Act 2004; viewable in a variety of browsers.

Remit was a complete site redesign also to incorporate a new business logo (designed by yadUK). The logo design followed clean lines and a modern feel, to associate with electrical appliances.
This site has now been totally redone complying with XHTML 4.01 Strict and CSS industry standards.

yadUKHosting Reboot

After 2 years it was time to “reboot” the yadUKHosting website! Though the servers have been upgraded twice since yadUKHosting.co.uk came online on 5th April 2004 the site sadly had taken a back seat.
yadUKHosting initially started out hosting sites from the yadUK.co.uk domain name – and as more and more people became interested in “cost effective” hosting solutions I decided it was time to move into ownership of my own hardware!

So began yadUKHosting, which has grown and become a popular hosting company across the UK for SME companies as well as individuals.

Please do take a look at yadUKHosting as it is: ” [...] able to provide you the customer with simple hosting solutions that include all the bells and whistles provided by the large Internet players: the big name IPPs (Internet Presence Providers), but at cost effective prices.”

HBOS: Vehicle Finance Intranet

The Intranet site was upgraded to adhere to XHTML Strict markup and to use CSS purely for its styling. Upgrade was inclusive of several self-built dynamic web-based applications.
Employed by HBOS: Vehicle Finance as Systems Analyst,  I took over the role of Lead Intranet Developer: inclusive of server management, and moved towards upgrading their flat HTML based Intranet site into a dynamic ASP: VBScript based portal to pull in the three distinct geographical areas making up Vehicle Finance: Edinburgh, Chester, Bushey.

Due to server restrictions, and cross domain users, I was unable to use a standard database format such as MS Access or MS SQL for a backend. Instead I opted for my own built flatfile XML based relational database.

As part of the upgrade an XML/JavaScript/ASP, based dynamic phonebook was produced to aide communication between the three geographical sites. A standalone MS Access “phonebook repository” exports XML for the Intranet when an entry is added/updated. This database extended to be the central Vehicle Finance Human Resources Repository, and again upgraded to also incorporate all Financial Services Authority details.

Other own built web applications to streamline business processes included a News CMS, and a Systems self-help tool (SOS) as well as an Online Systems Status tool.

Further projects integrated into the Intranet included business areas KPI (Key Performance Indicators) being updated direct to the Intranet from each core system / department through the use of Business Objects reporting software and MS Acess databases to export pertinant data into XML schema to be fed into Macromedia Flash graphic reporting .swf files.

CATS Shetland Appeal

Currently, over 500 people a year must travel from Shetland to Aberdeen for CAT scans. This website was designed as a base point for the appeal to raise £1 million GBP to provide Shetland’s NHS with a local CAT Scanner.

The appeal aims to provide equipment, building, training and running costs as well as providing a locally run CAT scanner as part of NHS Shetland’s forward plan. Funding the project now, instead of in a few years when it would be affordable to the NHS meant money being diverted from other vital health services. The operational costs of the scanner is to be transferred to the Health Board after 2 years.

The website is updatable by the individuals involved easily from a PHP / MySQL based Content Management System.

yadUK – experientia docet

Thinking that there was a hold up at the back of the site I decided to trip around the WayBackMachine and dig up some of the original ‘turn of my hand’ development from way back yesteryear.

Here is an incarnation of the yadUK site from 2004:

The Camera Centre

The Camera Centre, a locally owned business in Shetland. Originally a static information based site – the interest in cameras, camcorders etc. spurned a need for a fully updateable e-commerce site.
The sites shopping cart software allows for users to log in after setting up an account and cache products into their virtual shopping cart. When ready the user can then proceed to the checkout facility.

Users can also view latest and best buy products – calculated from the MySQL backend and displayed for ease of viewing.
